Privacy Policy

Last Updated: October 17, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how Antoine Gosset ("we", "us", or "our") operates thegosset.com and the Financial Independence (FI) Portal (accessible at thegosset.com/fi/), and describes our practices regarding the collection, use, and protection of your information.

We believe that personal financial information should remain strictly private. Our website and tools are engineered around a client-side first architecture where you retain full ownership and custody of your data.

1. Zero Server-Side Financial Data Storage

We do not operate a remote user database, backend server, or storage repository for your financial transactions or account balances.

  • Personal Financial Data: When you connect your Google Spreadsheet to the FI Portal, your balance records, expense categories, transactions, and net worth entries are read directly by your web browser from your Google account.
  • No Cloud Persistence: Your financial figures are never uploaded to, cached on, or processed by an external developer server operated by us.
  • Direct Communication: All communication occurs directly between your client browser and Google APIs or your own Google Apps Script endpoint.

2. Google API Services User Data Policy & Limited Use Disclosure

The FI Portal and its companion Google Workspace Add-on access Google user data solely to enable dashboard visualization and transaction recording.

Google API Limited Use Disclosure:
The FI Portal's use and transfer to any other app of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Specific Scopes Requested:

  • https://www.googleapis.com/auth/spreadsheets.currentonly:
    • Purpose: This narrow, least-privileged scope permits our companion script to read and update data only within the specific spreadsheet where you install or execute the Add-on.
    • Limitations: It does not grant access to any other spreadsheets, documents, photos, or files in your Google Drive.
    • Usage: Used strictly to read transaction history for rendering dashboard charts and append user-submitted expenses or balance updates.

Prohibitions:

  • We do not sell your Google user data to third parties.
  • We do not use or transfer your Google user data for serving advertisements (including personalized, retargeted, or interest-based advertising).
  • We do not allow humans to read your financial data, except in the rare event that you explicitly provide a sanitized log or screenshot for personal technical support.

3. Information We Collect Automatically

Because thegosset.com is hosted on a static edge content delivery network (Netlify), standard web server logs may record:

  • Technical Metadata: Browser user-agent, operating system, language preferences, referring URLs, and access timestamps.
  • Network Identifiers: Truncated or anonymized IP addresses utilized solely for network routing, DDoS prevention, and aggregate traffic telemetry.

We do not use tracking cookies, invasive third-party ad pixels, or behavioral cross-site trackers.

4. Browser Local Storage & Session Data

The FI Portal uses standard browser storage mechanisms (localStorage and sessionStorage) to provide a responsive, offline-tolerant experience without requiring a central login server:

Storage Key Purpose Retention
fi_portal_conf Stores your target Google Sheet ID and optional deployment parameters so you do not have to reconnect every visit. Persistent on device until cleared.
fi_portal_cache Stores a local cache of recent dashboard summaries to accelerate page load times and minimize redundant Google API requests. Refreshed every 30 minutes or on demand.
theme Stores your preference for Light Mode or Dark Mode on the main blog. Persistent on device.

You can inspect or delete this data at any time via your browser settings (Settings → Privacy and Security → Clear browsing data) or through the FI Portal Settings view.

5. Third-Party Services & CDNs

To deliver static assets securely and with low latency, we rely on the following third-party infrastructure:

These service providers process requests in accordance with their respective privacy policies and privacy regulations.

6. Data Security

Because your financial data remains in your personal Google account:

  • Your data is protected by Google’s enterprise security, authentication protocols, and two-factor verification.
  • All data transmissions between your browser, our static site, and Google APIs are encrypted using modern Transport Layer Security (HTTPS / TLS 1.3).
  • We encourage all users to enable 2-Step Verification on their Google Account to protect their personal spreadsheets.

7. Your Rights (GDPR, CCPA & Global Privacy)

Depending on your geographic jurisdiction, you have specific rights regarding your personal information:

  • Right of Access & Portability: Your data lives in your Google Sheet; you can export it to CSV, Excel, or PDF directly from Google Sheets at any time.
  • Right to Erasure: Because we store no copies of your data on our servers, deleting your data simply requires clearing your browser's local storage and deleting your Google Sheet copy.
  • Right to Revoke Permissions: You can revoke the FI Portal's access to your Google account at any time by visiting Google Account Permissions.

8. Children’s Privacy

Our website and services are not directed to children under the age of 13 (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children.

9. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect operational changes, architectural improvements, or regulatory updates. Any revisions will be published on this page with an updated "Effective Date". We encourage you to review this policy periodically.
